Giving a Copy of the Qur’an for Isal al-Thawab
Question
What is [the ruling on] performing isqat (the rite of “discharging” the deceased’s missed prayers and fasts through alms) on behalf of a deceased person with one copy of the Qur’an, with the intention that by this one sin of the deceased is forgiven for every verse of the Qur’an? And is a sin really forgiven?
Answer
What is meant by “performing isqat with the Qur’an”? If it means that [the Qur’an] is recited and isal al-thawab (gifting of reward) is made, then when reward is conveyed after reciting without payment, there is certainly reward and sins are forgiven; however, the rights of [Allah’s] servants (huquq al-‘ibad) are not forgiven by it.
