Children performing isal al-thawab
Question
When minor children recite the Qur’an, pray, or perform some other worship, does the reward for it go to them or to their parents? Also, we arrange a Qur’an recitation for isal al-thawab (gifting reward) to someone, in which minor children also recite. Can we, acting as [their] agents (wakils), gift the reward of what they recited to the deceased?
Answer
The good deeds that minor children perform — it is they themselves who deserve the reward for them; the parents receive the reward for teaching and upbringing. So it is in al-Durr al-Mukhtar. If the children recite the Qur’an and gift its reward to someone, their own reward will not be diminished by this, and the reward will reach the deceased.
