How Is Jointly Gifted Reward Divided?
Question
Do souls dwell in the graves? For one says: “Peace be upon you, O people of the graves” (السلام عليكم يا أهل القبور). And [it is said] that when someone in a graveyard recites the Qur’an and gifts [its reward], the souls divide the reward among themselves — to what extent is this correct?
Answer
Some souls do dwell in the grave as well — thus it is in “Kitab al-Ruh”. However, for greeting with salam or conveying reward it is not necessary for the soul to be in the grave; the connection itself is sufficient.
