Taking soil from a grave for blessing
Question
If a person takes soil from the grave of saintly elders and keeps it with himself for blessing (tabarrukan), is this permissible or not? If the second option [holds], what is the reason for the prohibition? If the first, there should be proof from the Qur’an and hadith. And if someone does bring soil from the shrine of saintly elders, in what kind of place should he put it? Is it correct to throw it onto a public road or not? What is the ruling in such a case? Explain and be rewarded (bayyinu tu’jaru).
Answer
Bringing soil taken from a waqf graveyard is impermissible, because it is waqf (لأنه وقف); and bringing soil taken from one’s own privately owned graveyard is permissible, because it is his property (لأنه ملكه). However, bringing soil from the grave of some saintly elder for blessing and keeping it with oneself is an innovated matter (amr muhdath).
