The forms of the grave
Question
How many ways are there of digging a grave? Was the grave of the Prophet ﷺ a side grave (lahd)? Is a side grave made like this: the grave is dug according to the length of the deceased, a hollow is dug in the side of this grave, and after the deceased is placed in it, it is closed in such a way that the deceased can neither sit up in it nor even turn onto his side? Is it right to bury the deceased in this way?
Answer
This method of [making] the grave is the best method, and where a side grave cannot be made, a shaqq is also correct. It is done thus: a grave as deep as a person's stature is dug, and within it a part is made in which the deceased is placed; over it planks or bamboo are laid, a mat or the like is spread, and earth is poured on.
