Can Those Outside Hear the Voice of the Deceased from the Grave?
Question
Can a voice come from the grave of a deceased person or not? If it can, why, and if it cannot be heard, why? For the story of ‘Alamgir ﵀ is well known: once he went to a graveyard, gave the salam there and said: “If no reply to the salam comes from the graves, I will break open all the graves,” and then a reply to the salam came from all the graves?
Answer
If some voice comes by way of a breach of the natural order (kharq al-‘ada), it can come — just as the noble Companions ﵃ heard the voice reciting Surat al-Mulk. Ordinarily, however, people do not hear the voice. But when the deceased is being punished, animals hear his voice; this is mentioned in the hadith.
