Speaking Ill of a Disbeliever after His Death
Question
People of the Jama‘at-i Islami say that even after a disbeliever’s death one should not speak ill of him: perhaps his end was on iman and people do not know it?
Answer
To speak ill of anyone — Muslim or non-Muslim, living or dead — without cause is bad; even cursing Satan without need is out of place. To spend in the remembrance of Allah the time that would be spent reviling someone is a means of great reward; Imam al-Ghazali discusses this in “Ihya’ al-‘Ulum”.
