Denying a Verse of the Qur’an out of Ignorance
Question
‘Umar is an unreliable man; Khalid places no trust in ‘Umar. ‘Umar recited [something from] the Qur’an; Khalid thought he was saying it merely to show superiority, and said, “This is not a verse of the Holy Qur’an,” since ‘Umar was not trusted — whereas it was a verse of the Holy Qur’an. Khalid has sought forgiveness. Does Khalid need to renew his iman?
Answer
If he himself could not recognise the verse and denied it because he regarded ‘Umar as unreliable, his iman has not ended by that. Renewal of iman as a precaution is in any case enjoined — he should keep doing it.
