Attending the Functions of One Who Denies Zakat
Question
[Continuation of the istifta of the preceding fatwa (“One Who Does Not Accept Zakat as Obligatory”): Zayd denies the obligatoriness of zakat, while Bakr accepts it but does not pay. In the printed edition one istifta is divided into three fatwas: points (a)–(b) here, (c)–(d) in the next.] (a) A Muslim has, in the light of the noble hadith, certain rights over another Muslim — for example, attending his funeral, visiting him when sick.
Answer
(a) Zayd denies the obligatoriness of zakat out of his ignorance; nevertheless, when the need arises, let him be visited [in sickness] too, and advised, and the importance of zakat explained to him — it is not unlikely that Allah Most High will guide him. (b)
