Attending the Functions of Those Who Commit Reprehensible Acts

Question

[Conclusion of the same istifta (see “One Who Does Not Accept Zakat as Obligatory” and “Attending the Functions of One Who Denies Zakat”): Zayd denies the obligatoriness of zakat, Bakr accepts it but does not pay; ‘Amr is their relative, a scholar.] (c) A close relative of Zayd and Bakr — ‘Amr, being a scholar of religion, keeps reminding them, but ‘Amr’s words are ignored; so, as a mark of displeasure, he never attends their invitations. Is ‘Amr entitled to do so, or does ‘Amr become a sinner? (d)

Answer

(c) If reform can be expected from attending, one should attend; if reform can be expected from not attending and showing displeasure, then not attending and showing displeasure is right. (d) The same as stated above.
