The Faith of the Parents of the Prophet ﷺ

Question

Is there, in the books of sirah or in the hadiths, a narration that the parents of the Prophet ﷺ were believers, or not? If there is, what is its standing? And what is the position of holding the belief and certainty that they were believers?

Answer

Concerning whether the parents of the Prophet ﷺ were believers, the great scholars hold differing positions. Some say: “They died upon kufr.” In one narration it is said: [ar]اسْتَأْذَنْتُ رَبِّي أَنْ أَسْتَغْفِرَ لِأُمِّي فَلَمْ يَأْذَنْ لِي[/ar] “I asked my Lord’s permission to seek forgiveness for my mother, but He did not permit me.
