The Remuneration of an Imam Who Does Not Keep to His Duties
Question
An imam was appointed in a mosque to lead the prayer, and grain was promised to him, on the condition that if he missed the Friday prayer or roamed about outside without need, then no one would fulfil the promise of grain. After that the hafiz led the prayer for three and a half months; during this period he roamed about idly, did not hold the congregation (jama‘a) on time, and when the muqtadis (those praying behind the imam) spoke to him, he was insolent to them.
Answer
For as many days as he led the prayer, the grain for that many days should be given to this imam, and the rest should simply be spent on the mosque.
