Taking a Non-Mahram Woman Along on the Hajj Journey
Question
Is there any latitude for going on Hajj taking along a woman who is not one’s mahram? Some women are widows and have no mahram either; if it is impermissible, then what way is there for them to perform Hajj? Furthermore, there are incidents involving some religious scholars in which they sent a non-mahram woman for Hajj with a man who was not her mahram. For example, there is an incident here from Bhaisani: Hazrat Thanawi ﵀ sent a woman from here with some pilgrims from Kanpur.
Answer
It is forbidden for a woman to travel without a mahram or without her husband, whether she is mushtahat (one who arouses desire) or not. A widow who has no mahram with her should marry. I too know of one incident. Hazrat Mawlana Khalil Ahmad Saharanpuri ﵀ intended to perform Hajj.
