Hanging someone’s photograph in the house as a keepsake
Question
Question: If in someone’s house or in some shop and the like someone’s photograph is hung — for example, of one’s relative, of some venerable elder, or a group photograph of a class in which one’s companions are included — as a keepsake of them, or the photograph of some person from a distant land (as a keepsake), that is, it is put in a frame and hung up, what is the ruling on this?
Answer
Taking a photograph of any animate being is itself impermissible; then putting it in a frame and hanging it up for adornment raises the sin (maʿsiya) to a higher degree. Whether the photograph is of a relative, or of some pious elder, or of friends — whosever it may be — there is no permission.
