Buying magazines that contain images

Question

What is the ruling on buying magazines that contain images, such as digests and the like, and also religious magazines that contain images? Kindly give a reasoned and detailed answer with references.

Answer

Magazines that are bought for the sake of images of animate beings are not permissible to buy, “لأن الأمور بمقاصدها” (“because matters are judged by their aims”). If the aim is to read sound content, then buying them is permissible; the images are secondary, and they should be erased.
