A picture of an animate being on cloth
Question
What is the ruling on making pictures of peacocks and the like on the border of cotton cloth? A certain man does not want to make them of his own accord, but they are ordered from him; he even objects to this, saying: “I strongly object to making such a thing with figures.” What is the ruling on making them in this situation?
Answer
A picture of an animate being — whether it is made on a wall, on paper or on cloth; whether it is made with a pen, by machine or with some other instrument all at once, or each limb separately; whether it is in the weave of cloth or in the making of some other thing — is in every case impermissible and a sin.
