Keeping photographs
Question
If a photograph or picture is kept for decoration, is that appropriate or not? Or if it is kept merely as a keepsake? Please also write about keeping a half-length or full-length photograph. Many books also contain pictures and the like — is it permissible to keep them?
Answer
A photograph of an animate being, whether full or half-length, whether as a keepsake or for decoration, is impermissible in every case. If the pictures are in books — as, for example, among dictionaries there is al-Munjid — and those books are closed, then there is leeway.
