Writing “Siddiqi” with one’s name
Question
Question: Among Muslims, people of various castes ascribe themselves with the nisba “Siddiqi” (صدیقی) added to their names, although they do not have this ascription in reality; they attach this nisba to themselves merely as a good omen or with some other aim in view. Is it right to attach the said nisba to one’s name or not?
Answer
In common usage nowadays, “Siddiqi” denotes one who is among the descendants of the first Caliph, Hazrat Abu Bakr al-Siddiq ﵁. Therefore, if a person who is not among his descendants writes “Siddiqi” with his name, this is not right: it causes deception. And for one who changes his lineage a severe threat (wa‘id)
