The name Muhammad Hurmuz

Question

Question: A man named his son Muhammad Hurmuz ‘Ali (محمد ہرمز علی). What is the ruling on giving this name? Some people say that giving this name is not right. Whose name was Hurmuz?

Answer

Hurmuz (ہرمز) was the name of a Persian prince. Among them this name was not commonly given in such a way that whoever wished could name his child Hurmuz; rather, it was held in such esteem that the name was regarded as a royal name. No meanings of it have been found that are contrary to Islam; therefore this name, too, is not impermissible.
