Eating for payment at the house of one whose wealth is doubtful

Question

Question: I am very anxious about whether my food is halal or haram. I take my meals with a person whose wealth is haram and doubtful. Is it permissible for me in the Shari‘a to eat at such a person’s place, paying for my board, or not?

Answer

If his wealth is entirely haram, or most of his wealth is haram, then eating his food is not permissible for you; make your arrangements somewhere else. And if most of his wealth is halal and a smaller amount is haram, and it is all mixed, then there is latitude for you to eat his food. If it is merely doubtful, then do not fall into anxiety by troubling yourself.
