Burning chillies against the evil eye

Question

When a child or some animal, for example a buffalo or a cow, is struck by the evil eye, women commonly take chillies, or seven scraps of cloth, or just a piece of stitched cloth, gesture with it towards the child or the animal seven times or somewhat more or less, and throw it into a burning fire. How is it to remove the evil eye in this way? They also remove it with alum and the like?

Answer

Burning chillies and the like in a fire after reciting (over them) in order to remove the evil eye is permissible, provided that nothing contrary to the Shari‘a is recited over them — for example, invoking some goddess or god and the like, or seeking help from some jinn or devil and the like.
