Girls staying together with boys in school and the like
Question
If a girl studies in a men’s school together with non-mahram boys, and there is every kind of mixing with non-mahrams, both in private and in public, will her parents be sinful or not? And how should all Muslims treat her family? Is it permissible or not for a non-mahram man to live together in one room with a young non-mahram woman whose husband is alive? Mostly they live in a separate room, and there is no third person. Does this entail a major sin?
Answer
If the parents have given permission for this and are pleased with this conduct of the girl, then the parents too will be gravely sinful. Likewise, the staying of these two in a room is haram; no mahr becomes binding through this haram act.
