Forcing one’s wife to abandon hijab

Question

Zayd married his daughter Safiyya to Zafar, the son of ‘Umar, on the condition that his daughter would remain in hijab and keep to the pillars of the Shari‘a. After two years Zafar began to keep his wife without hijab; moreover, when she recites the Qur’an, she is answered: “What is this endless tale you have started?” When Zayd learned of this, he brought his daughter home. Zafar insists that he will take his wife away, while Zayd says: “You did not fulfil the condition, so now I will not send her off.

Answer

Zayd should take a firm pledge from Zafar and have it put in writing before several respectable people that Zafar will henceforth keep his wife in hijab, will not force her to abandon hijab, and will also observe the rulings of the Shari‘a.
