Covering the face
Question
Question: Madam Halide Edib, who is a famous Turkish woman, in her seventh lecture on the subject “The Conflict of East and West in Turkey”, clearly stated the following: “According to the Word of God, women were commanded to cover their heads, bosoms and adornment; covering the faces is not mentioned anywhere, nor were women told to sit at home and not perform public service.
Answer
After accepting the command to cover the head, the bosom, adornment and the whole body, hesitating over the command to cover the faces is truly astonishing. It is a point to reflect on: for what purpose is the command [ar]قُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا۟ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ[/ar] “Tell the believing men to lower their gazes…” (Surah al-Nur, 24:30)?
