A study on the beard of one fistful

Question

Question: For some days the issue of the beard has been stirred up. What we wish to know is: what is the correct measure of the beard according to the Hanafis? Is it permissible to make it less than one fistful or not? Please write the true ruling. If possible, please cite some verbal (qawli) hadith and a verse of the Qur’an concerning the one fistful. It will be a kindness.

Answer

In the noble hadith the words [ar]أَعْفُوا اللِّحَى، أَرْخُوا اللِّحَى، أَوْفِرُوا اللِّحَى[/ar] are clearly present, whose translation is: “Let the beard grow,” “Let the beard hang down,” “Make the beard abundant.” These words would require that no limit be set to growing it and that cutting it be not permissible at all.
