Using contraceptive medicine because of weakness
Question
There is a woman who is no longer capable of bearing the burden of pregnancy. At present she is pregnant; it is the initial month. Various kinds of medicines are being given, yet the weakness persists. The doctors advise that family planning be practised, otherwise there will be a danger to life in the future. What is the ruling of the Shari‘a in such a condition?
Answer
If, because of weakness, she cannot bear a pregnancy, then adopting, as treatment, such a measure that conception does not take place until strength returns is correct (permissible). The husband too should be cautious about intercourse; if desire overpowers him, he should fast.
