Changing sex by surgery is haram

Question

Question: Changing sex ("sex"), i.e. changing one's created form — a man becoming a woman and a woman becoming a man: is it permissible or impermissible according to the pure Shari‘a to undergo an operation to change sex? Does this abominable act not entail altering the creation (taghyir al-khalq)? Please give a detailed and reasoned answer on its permissibility or impermissibility in the light of the Qur'an and hadith.
