Treating an animal with pig fat
Question
Question: A man, because of a bruise, had a Bhangi (sweeper) rub pig fat onto his male buffalo; but the injury was such that no wound had formed, and this was done on advice. What needs to be ascertained is this: is the meat of this buffalo permissible after slaughter or not? And may a Muslim wash the buffalo while touching with his hand the place where the fat was applied, or not?
Answer
(1) The pig is intrinsically impure (najis al-ʿayn): everything of it is impure, and using it is impermissible. If this buffalo has no other treatment and pig fat alone is the treatment, then in such a case having it rubbed on is permissible. Once it has been washed with rubbing and no fat remains there, that spot too has become pure; touching that spot is now permissible.
