The Beliefs and Practices of the Shi‘a and the Legal Ruling Concerning Them (Marriage, Funeral Prayer, Slaughter, Spitting into Food and Drink)

Question

(1) What is the condition for being of the Ahl al-Sunna wa-l-Jama‘a? Can that man, too, be a Sunni who says, “My mother was a Sunni and my father a Shi‘i,” while the woman whom the said person has married is a hard-line Shi‘a and, moreover, he has married his daughter to the son of a Shi‘i mujtahid, regularly attends the Shi‘a mourning gatherings, and yet professes to be a Sunni? The mosque’s previous imam (before the present one)

Answer

Those who adopt the beliefs, deeds and morals taught by the Noble Prophet ﷺ are called the Ahl al-Sunna: first the noble Companions ﵃ adopted them, and thereafter others followed them: [ar]هُمْ مَا أَنَا عَلَيْهِ وَأَصْحَابِي[/ar] “They are [upon] that which I and my Companions are upon” (hadith). The founder of the Shi‘i madhhab was Ibn Saba (a Jew).
