What to do when a person will not accept repayment of his loan

Question

Question: When the consolidation of landholdings was taking place, our father gave a Hindu priest one hundred rupees, for the purpose that he would give this money to the A.C.O. (consolidation officer) and have my plot placed in a good location. When I asked the A.C.O., he said: “I will give you your plot in a good location without taking any bribe.” So I went and took the money back from the priest. After that the priest came again and said: “The respected A.C.O. is asking for money.

Answer

Deduct 55 rupees, put the remaining 45 rupees in an envelope and place it before him (saying): “Look at it and read it,” and also put a note in it: “Your hundred rupees were owed by us; 55 rupees were given earlier, and here are the remaining 45 rupees.” When he picks up the envelope, his taking possession (qabd) will have occurred, and you will be discharged.
