A form of salam
Question
Question: (1) In our country there is this occupation and custom: for example, in the month of April one hundred rupees are given to a debtor and, by mutual arrangement, i.e. by verbal agreement: “In the month of November or December I will take maize,” — he says: “For a hundred rupees I will give ten maunds (a unit of weight, ≈ 37 kg).” This practice is current. At the time the debtor takes the hundred rupees, the price of maize is one and a half rupees per seer (a unit of weight, ≈ 0.93 kg)
Answer
To give a hundred rupees and agree that after so many days, in such-and-such a month, I will take maize for these rupees at such-and-such a rate and take it at such-and-such a place, and to settle everything in such a way that there is no dispute afterwards — then this transaction is valid in the Sharia, whatever the general rate may be.
