Increasing the price on account of deferment in a salam sale
Question
Question: (1) At present, in the month of Jeth (a month of the Indian calendar, May–June), paddy (unhusked rice) sells in the market at twenty-five rupees a maund (a unit of weight, ≈ 37 kg). Zayd said: “If you pay the price of the paddy in the month of Kartik (a month of the Indian calendar, October–November), I will take 35 rupees.” Is it valid to take 35 rupees for one maund of paddy or not?
Answer
(1) On account of cash payment and deferment the price can be lower or higher, and in the Sharia this is not interest. Whatever price the paddy was sold at, it is valid to take that same price at the appointed time. However, one should show kindness to someone who is poor and cannot pay the price; increasing the price greatly is contrary to magnanimity (muruwwa). (2)
