Selling paddy mixed with water
Question
At present in the village a sack of paddy (unhusked rice) sells for forty rupees. The traders buy from the owner by giving two rupees more, that is, they buy for forty-two rupees in cash. Then the traders mix water into this paddy and sell it to the wholesale commission agent. Now people say that the owner knows the trader will mix water into this paddy and sell it, so this owner’s sale is impermissible, because he gives it to the trader despite knowing.
Answer
Despite this knowledge, it is correct for the owner to sell the genuine paddy to the trader. If the trader mixes water into it and sells it deceptively, he himself will be the sinner: [ar]مَنْ غَشَّنَا فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا[/ar] “Whoever deceives us is not of us” (hadith).
