Cultivating tobacco, trading in it and using it

Question

In our area tobacco is cultivated and then traded. Everyone is involved in this, that is, both Muslims and non-Muslims cultivate it and sell it to one another. As for using it, some people call it haram and some call it makruh. So what is the ruling according to the Shari‘a? Please explain regarding cultivation and trade, and likewise regarding its use.

Answer

Cultivating tobacco is permissible, trading in it is also permissible, and using it is also permissible, unless it is intoxicating, in which case it will be forbidden. When going to the mosque, one should take care to clean the mouth and remove its bad smell.
