Roza-Kushai — Celebrating a Child’s First Fast
Question
In Ramadan people often make a small child keep a fast and then hold a roza-kushai (روزہ کشائی — a ceremonial breaking of the child’s first fast), making elaborate arrangements for it in their homes. Should one go to such a place to break the fast or not? Was there such a custom of roza-kushai in the time of the Companions ﵃ as well?
Answer
Fasting involves considerable hardship; if, to encourage the child and also by way of gratitude, the iftar is somewhat enlarged relative to [the usual], there appears to be scope for it. In the era of the noble Companions ﵃ no trace of it is found.
