Gathering Commemorating the Martyrdom
Question
(1) If Zayd — in the days of Muharram or outside the days of Muharram — sits at home in a simple manner, invites seven or eight more people, and reads reliable, authenticated and sound narrations of the martyrdom, in which there is no lamentation, no elegy and the like, and no verses contrary to the Shari‘a — is holding such a gathering correct or not? (2) Is it correct or not to take part in the gathering commemorating the martyrdom that is held among the common people in the days of Muharram? (3)
Answer
(1) In the days of Muharram it is impermissible. Outside the days of Muharram, if the aim is to obtain blessing, then first the other senior noble Companions ﵃ should be mentioned — the two Shaykhs (Abu Bakr and ‘Umar ﵄) and the two sons-in-law of the Prophet ﷺ (‘Uthman and ‘Ali ﵄) — and then a correct and accurate account of Hazrat Imam Husayn ﵁ should be given.
