Gathering of Sama‘ (Listening)

Question

Is the gathering of sama‘ (listening [to devotional singing]) that is held at the shaykhs’ [lodges] permissible or not? Along with that, kindly give an explanation.

Answer

A gathering of sama‘ in which there are also musical instruments (mazamir) is impermissible by consensus. Without instruments, to recite in a particular melodious voice some poem in praise of Allah Most High or in praise of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — provided it consists of sound content — is proper.
