Stretching One’s Legs Toward the Pole Star

Question

It is said that a light used to appear in the northern direction, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “That was my light.” Hence the common people consider stretching one’s feet toward the Pole Star to be very bad, and revere it even more than the qibla. Kindly explain: what is the truth of the matter?
