Neglecting Medical Abstinence out of Tawakkul
Question
Zayd is fully convinced that no thing has the power to bring benefit or harm. How is it to be judged if, during some illness, he — because of this conviction — does not abstain from the harmful things the physicians tell him to avoid?
Answer
Indeed, no thing has a direct power to bring benefit or harm, because the Benefiter and the Harmer (al-Nafi‘ and al-Darr) is Allah the Exalted alone. Yet it is also necessary to accept that Allah the Pure has placed effects (ta’thirat) in His creatures.
