Is a Poor Man’s Marriage to a Poor Woman by Predestination or by Effort?

Question

(1) The marriage that a person contracts — is it from Allah, or by the person’s own arrangement? A disagreement has arisen here. (2) In the lot of the rich is to be rich only, and in the lot of the poor is to be poor only; a rich man does not give his daughter to a poor man. Is all this from Allah, or is it man’s effort?

Answer

(1) Before any person comes into this world, everything concerning him has already been fixed by Allah the Pure; however many thousand efforts a person makes against it, or however much he wishes, he can never succeed. This is iman; this is what every Muslim’s belief ought to be; and this is also the teaching of the Holy Qur’an and the noble hadith. (2)
