Vegetable oil (sunflower, rapeseed, soybean, corn) — is it halal?
Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)
Description
Vegetable oil is oil from oil-bearing raw materials (sunflower, rapeseed, soya, maize, etc.), unrefined or refined; it may be a blend. The oil itself is plant-based. But “culinary”, “confectionery”, “bakery”, “frying” fat under TR CU 024/2011 may contain rendered animal fats.
Basis of the ruling
Vegetable oil (sunflower, rapeseed, soybean, corn etc.) is plant-based. Unrefined oil is pressed; for refined oil the oil is extracted with a solvent — hexane (synthetic, pure) or ethanol whose source is not disclosed. Special-purpose fats (culinary, confectionery, frying)
