The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Plant syrups (maple, agave, date) — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Plant syrups per the card: maple, agave, date, rice, Jerusalem artichoke, chicory. The raw material is plant-based. These syrups are not named in the dossier sources; in the EU they fall under “other sugars and syrups” (category 11.2), where Group I additives (including E471) are allowed. In the EAEU the general list of clarifiers includes dried blood plasma and albumin; carbon for treacle solutions is plant-only.

Basis of the ruling

Maple, agave and date syrups are plant-based. Dried blood plasma of livestock and food albumin are permitted for clarifying syrups; they are not listed in the ingredients, and blood is haram and impure. The finished product does not show whether this was used, so such a product is doubtful (mushbooh)
