Tropical fruit (pineapple, mango, passion fruit, papaya, kiwi) — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Tropical fruit (pineapple, mango, passion fruit, papaya, guava, lychee, kiwi, pitaya), their juices and purées. The fruit itself is plant-based. The peel of fresh pineapples and mangoes may be coated with wax and shellac E904, of papayas with shellac; in the EU also E471. Gelatine, among others, is allowed for juice clarification.

Basis of the ruling

Pineapple, mango, passion fruit, papaya and kiwi are plant-based. The fruit peel is coated with wax and shellac E904 (an insect secretion that retains particles of the insect itself) and with emulsifiers based on fatty acids of unknown origin; on loose fruit this is not always visible.
