The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Onion, garlic — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Onion (bulb, leek, spring onion, shallot) and garlic: fresh, dried, powders, pastes, extracts. The plants themselves are plant-based. For fried onion the fat is per the ingredients; refined animal fat may be named “animal fat” without the species.

Basis of the ruling

Onion and garlic — fresh, dried, powders, pastes — are plant-based. They are fried in "cooking" or "frying fat", which may contain rendered animal fats, and the ingredients name it only by this general term. The finished product does not show whether this was used, so such a product is doubtful (mushbooh)
