The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Magnesium (fortificant) — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Magnesium in food comes as its salts: inorganic (carbonate, chloride, hydroxide, oxide, phosphates, sulphate) and organic (citrate, gluconate, lactate, glycerophosphate, bisglycinate, malate, taurate, threonate etc.). Magnesium itself is mineral — from seawater, brines, magnesite and dolomite.

Basis of the ruling

Magnesium in food comes as its salts. Magnesium itself is mineral — from seawater, brines, magnesite and dolomite; the organic salts are made from acids and amino acids. Magnesium glycerophosphate is made from glycerol whose raw material is not named, and glycerol can also be animal, including from pigs.
