The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Iodine (potassium iodide, iodate) — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Iodine in food: potassium and sodium iodide and iodate, calcium iodate, cuprous iodide, seaweed iodine and iodinated milk proteins. Iodine is mined from mineral raw materials: about 55 % from caliche ore (Chile), about 45 % from brines of gas and oil wells (USDA); per USGS another ~17 % of world supply is recycled; the salts are made chemically.

Basis of the ruling

Iodine is extracted from caliche and well brines, and its salts (iodide, iodate) are made chemically. The doubt lies in iodinated milk proteins (iodocasein). Their raw material can be milk protein hydrolysate whose hydrolysis method is not named; with enzymatic hydrolysis pig enzymes are not excluded.
