Casein, caseinates, milk protein — is it halal?
Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)
Description
Casein is the main milk protein; it is precipitated from skim milk with acid (acid casein: hydrochloric or sulfuric acid or a lactic starter) or with rennet enzymes (rennet casein: animal rennet, microbial enzymes, chymosin from GM microorganisms). Sodium, potassium and calcium caseinates are made by neutralising casein with alkalis and drying. Used in non-dairy creamers, processed cheese, margarine.
Basis of the ruling
Casein is the main protein of milk: it is precipitated from skimmed milk with acids or starter cultures (acid casein) or with rennet-type enzymes (rennet casein), and sodium, potassium and calcium caseinates are made from casein with alkalis; milk is halal.
