E901 Beeswax — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

A glazing agent and carrier: beeswax, the honey bee's secretion rendered from combs; white wax is bleached yellow wax. Every instrument describing the raw material names bee combs; specifications test for fats and foreign waxes. Refining and bleaching use peroxide, acid, sunlight and, per the technical dossier, earths and activated carbon of undisclosed nature. Allowed everywhere.

Basis of the ruling

Beeswax is a secretion of the honeybee: it is melted out of the combs, purified and bleached. The standards allow only wax from combs, but beeswax is adulterated on the market.
