The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

E475 Polyglycerol esters of fatty acids — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

An emulsifier: esters of polyglycerol (mainly di-, tri- and tetraglycerol) with fatty acids of edible fats and oils. The polyglycerol is made from glycerol; the fatty part comes from transesterification of fats or esterification with fatty acids.

Basis of the ruling

Polyglycerol esters are made from polyglycerol, produced from glycerol, and fatty acids of edible fats and oils. The EU and Chinese standards do not name the type of fat; the US standard expressly allows pig fat (lard)
