E473 Sucrose esters of fatty acids — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

An emulsifier: mono-, di- and triesters of sucrose with edible fatty acids. It is made by transesterifying sucrose with fatty acid methyl esters or with fats over an alkaline catalyst — in a solvent or in an aqueous medium with soap; the EU also admits ethyl and vinyl esters. The EU, China and JECFA do not name the kind of fat; the US instrument names edible tallow outright (no species stated)

Basis of the ruling

Sucrose esters are made by combining sucrose with fatty-acid methyl esters or with fats over an alkaline catalyst. The EU, Chinese and JECFA standards do not name the type of fat; the US standard expressly names edible tallow — the animal species not named, slaughter not according to the Shariah; a patent names beef…
